Dear Brothers and Sisters, Our headline areas this month are Tonga and Malaysia It is interesting to watch what effects the COVID-19 pandemic is having throughout the world and particularly in the ecclesial world. It is certainly having an effect on our way of life no matter where we are living. It is very encouraging that our Christadelphian communities are all continuing faithfully in their worship of our God and in care for one another. There are some cases where a brother or sister has contracted the virus and thankfully has recovered in answer to the prayers of their families and ecclesias. Fortunately, in most of the island nations in the South Pacific such as Tonga the virus has not yet made its presence felt in direct health terms. Nonetheless there is an economic effect with an increase in food prices in particular and this is being monitored and provided for by the Area Team. Making visits of course is still not possible and contact is generally limited to telephone calls, so the ability to provide exhortation and teaching is very limited. The two brethren that watch over this small group are very diligent in their continuing care for those who seek the Truth around them. When travel restrictions are eventually lifted, and if you can make a pastoral visit please let the Area Team know, as this would be very beneficial. As a nation in South East Asia, Malaysia has handled Covid-19 very well and like many developed nations, as an endeavour to get our economies going, are now lifting restrictions on people’s movements. During the last three months of isolation the use of teleconferencing has been made with great effect. In a number of places such as Malaysia this has developed a greater relationship with those who live in distant locations and even time-zones. The Wellington ecclesia has a natural connection with the ecclesia in Kuala Lumpur and they now share together many of their ecclesial activities in a two-way relationship. This is something that would never have developed before the current circumstances played out. It is so very encouraging to see that as those who wait for our Lord’s return, we are all seeking ways to meet our common need for the “comfort of the Scriptures.”

Please remember the ACBM COVID-19 NATIONAL DISASTER APPEAL
|
The ACBM is continuing to carefully monitor the impact of COVID-19 in the areas of our service from India through Asia to the Pacific Islands. Along with ongoing spiritual support, our dedicated Area Teams have provided significant financial support to help where many are out of work, where food prices have increased and brothers and sisters do not have Government assistance or a medical system as we enjoy in Australia and New Zealand. To meet these needs, we have now launched a National Disaster Appeal to raise AU$60,000 (NZ$64,200). We ask that all donations to brothers and sisters in mission areas be channelled through the ACBM. Each Area Team is closely in touch with its members and is focused on relieving the situation in the most appropriate way possible for all who are being affected. Donations for this National Disaster Appeal can be made by EFT to ACBM, BSB:062-210 / Account No: 090 3098 / SWIFT/BIC: CTBAAU2S / Note Field: Disaster Fund

Preaching the Word - Caring for the Brotherhood

TongaIn January this year the Mudge family from New Zealand spent time with our brethren in the Kingdom of Tonga.
This was their first time in the mission fields. On arrival they were greeted by brother Dickie, himself young in Christ, who has been performing most of the teaching and nurturing work on his own. He was very grateful for the visit of Brendan, Jess and their three children, Aviva, Zachaiy and Caleb.
Currently there are two brothers based on the main island of Tonga, plus ten interested friends and young people.

Brother Dickie took the new visitors on a short tour, with touch points to brother Ralph and interested friends. Being cyclone season, they had accommodation that was inland and slightly elevated, and this provided a place to live and have gatherings of friends. Brendan and Jess brought encouragement to the small group with both spiritual and practical support. Keeping in mind the various levels of understanding of both English and the scriptures within the group, Brendan led a series of Bible classes on “Christ in the Psalms.” Jess spent time with a group of young people across a wide spectrum of ages, teaching the early life of Moses, through the wilderness and into the promised land.

With lack of easy access to helpful scriptural material within Tonga, one of the projects the group worked on together was that of building up a lending library, which was established within brother Ralph’s 20 foot shipping container. Books and study aids from Ralph and Dickie, plus the contribution from field workers over the years, have resulted in a great library now available in a dry place for storage.

At Bible studies and group activities there is a core group of interested friends, but there are also new faces that come and go all the time, which is the nature of the Islands. This does not hinder the work, since we never know when the word of God might take hold. Brendan, the handyman that he is, set up a sink and running water in the kitchen of brother Ralph’s house, which is normally used for meetings and Sunday school. Kitchens prove very handy at a place for meetings, since after studies everyone wants to play some part in preparing the meal together.

MalaysiaWe currently have 36 brothers and sisters throughout Malaysia. Most of these members have come as a direct result of the preaching effort of Brother Kahfook and Sister Tina Tham and their family, over a period of 20 years.
With the COVID-19 restrictions we are currently continuing with our preaching effort, using a Bible seminar series online. We now have 10 active contacts who are logging in weekly. These are all from Malaysia but the session is conducted remotely from NZ by brother Kahfook. This has meant we have forged much closer ties with the Wellington Ecclesia and we share many activities together.
The Malaysian Government has managed the coronavirus situation well and have begun to relax the isolation controls we have been under since March 18. Many of our members are elderly so they are remaining locked down and keeping up with online classes. None of our members have been directly affected by the virus and so far the financial impact has not been felt by our members, for which we are very thankful. We have a special study weekend planned for the 27-28th June with Brother Ron Holburn from Auckland, to the subject, “A Name above all Names.” Brother Ron visits us on a yearly basis, this year however it will be via Zoom meeting.
In the picture: In December 2019 we were Blessed to have Brother Christian Russell from USA who flew to Malaysia for 2 weekends to share Fellowship and lead studies from the life of Samuel.
