Sri Lanka

RETURNING TO SRI LANKA:

Bro Axel Jansen and I last visited Sri Lanka in 2019, the week after the Easter Bombings. We were delighted this recent visit did not entail any major disasters. Although in recent months Sri Lanka has received a lot of news coverage due to its ongoing economic crisis, which has severely impacted the lives of brothers and sisters in Sri Lanka, for visitors there were no obvious concerns, issues or fear for our personal safety. The benefits of visiting those in the ecclesias of Sri Lanka far out way any other considerations.

The highlights of our short 10-day visit were our involvement at 3 ecclesial locations and the baptisms of those who have recently confessed their faith in the Gospel of Christ: 3 baptisms in the centre of the island at Mihintale; 5 baptisms in the south of the island inland from Matala; and 3 baptisms near Negombo. These 11 baptisms were the culmination of first principles instruction by Sis Aloka de Ambrew, with the support of Bro Frank Ryan, who returned to Australia due to COVID after living in Sri Lanka for 10 years, but continued his support online.

The other highlight of our visit was attending Watalla Ecclesia’s Sunday School outing to the Pinawella Elephant Orphanage. It was a delight to spend a day with the ecclesial members. We also enjoyed the one Sunday we had in Sri Lanka attending the Watalla Ecclesial Meeting. They have a well-supported Sunday School program, including an adult class and after the Memorial Meeting, they have a communal lunch.

Our visit was too short, and we would love to return as soon as possible as there is much work in Sri Lanka. COVID has not stopped the Gospel being preached and possibly others will be ready for baptism towards year end when the Annual Bible School will be held for the first time since 2019. Please add Sri Lanka to your destinations to visit amongst the mission fields. It is an easy place for foreigners to travel and you will be welcomed by our brothers and sisters across this wonderful island country.
