COVID-19 update – India
6 May 2021
Dear Brothers and Sisters,
Our dedicated ACBM Area Teams have continued for the past 13 months helping our brothers and sisters in mission areas during this challenging COVID period. Most of our members overseas do not have Government assistance or a medical system as we enjoy in Australia and New Zealand.
The media attention highlighting 400,000 COVID cases per day and 4,000 deaths per day in India, has generated many requests for information about our 2,000 brothers and sisters there. When there are lockdowns, many who are day labourers cease receiving any income to buy food or pay their rent. Should one member of a household get a positive COVID result, all members of the household must quarantine, again stopping any income being earned. All of this means there is an urgent need for our prayers and financial support.
Sadly there have been deaths among our Indian ecclesias as shown by the following messages received:
Our Area Team Leader for North East India wrote in his expense report: “The saddest item, is the hospital expenses for Sis Sikha Debbarma, 22 years old. She was baptised last year at Khowai, a town 60-70 km from Agartala in Tripura state – a member of Agartala Ecclesia. She was admitted to the local hospital about 10 April with COVID-19 symptoms. The small hospital had no facilities to treat her properly and had run out of oxygen. She died a week later before the brethren at Agartala knew anything about the situation – very distressing. The brothers and sisters at Agartala are very upset. It is the first death from COVID-19 in North East India of a brother or sister …”
Bro Tim Galbraith received this SMS: “GOOD MORNING DEAR LOVING BROTHER. MOGALTHUR ECCLESIA BROTHERS AND SISTERS SEND GREETINGS. COVID POSITIVE PRESENTLY IN MY FAMILY 6 MEMBERS. AFTER BRO YESU DIED YESTERDAY ALL ARE WORRIED. PLEASE PRAY FOR US DEAR BROTHER. FOR THESE MEDICAL PROBLEMS PLEASE. WITH PRAYERS FOR YOU, LOVE IN CHRIST JESUS. ”
Expenditure in India, Pakistan and Bangladesh has now risen to about $AU 20,000 ($NZ 21,570) per month to provide basic food, hygiene and rent. In Pakistan, where we have 1,700 brothers and sisters, approximately $AU 3,500 ($NZ 3,775) is being spent per month in the Punjab area alone assisting families with basic needs because of the recent lockdown and loss of work.
Other mission areas also continue to be in need of support.
Because we have now almost exhausted funds collected from our last COVID-19 appeal which you supported so generously, we are now opening a further appeal. If you wish to contribute, donations to the ACBM National Disaster fund can be made by EFT to:
Australia: ACBM, BSB: 062-210, Account No: 0090 3098, SWIFT/BIC: CTBAAU2S.
New Zealand: ACBM (NZ), 03-0146-0136146-00.
Please include COVID in the note field. Credit card donations (fees apply), either as a one-off contribution, or regular payment, can be made via the GIVE option on the ACBM website: www.acbm.org.au
Every contribution helps, no matter how small. $10 can feed a family in Pakistan for a week.
Above all else, we seek your prayers for the family of God throughout the world. We face very challenging times and are in great need of our Father’s blessing. Most of all we pray for the return of our Lord Jesus.
With love in our Lord,
ACBM National Secretary
